Freescale Semiconductor Simplifies Wireless Radio Front End Design

Miniaturization Delivers Affordability, Size, and Flexibility Benefits to Designers and Consumers

TEMPE, Ariz.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Sept. 21, 2004— Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. (NYSE:FSL) is enabling wireless handset manufacturers and designers to meet demands for smaller footprints and flexibility by integrating power amplification and control functions in a tiny module. In addition to design enhancements, manufacturers using this module will be able to make more phones per hour.

Targeted for a wide variety of next generation GSM/GPRS phones, the advanced, miniaturized power amplifier module provides quad-band power amplification and simplifies radio front end design requirements. This power amplifier is highly integrated and designed to compress manufacturers' time to market by requiring very little board space and easing factory constraints.

The MMM6035 power amplifier integrated circuit is a small, 50-ohm power amplifier module for quad-, tri- and dual-band GSM handset applications, across the 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz bands. This device is an extremely small amplifier in size (6mm x 6mm, height: 1 mm), resulting in the ease of integration by handset manufacturers.

This module incorporates the power control function that helps simplify radio front-end design requirements including low ripple across the frequency band, and a valuable anti-saturation function. Simplified control and manufacturing calibration eases factory constraints and throughput. This simple two die module also eliminates the need for internal surface mount devices (SMDs), enabling high reliability, quality and flexibility during module manufacturing to provide a very cost-effective solution.

"This addition to our wireless RF products portfolio is designed to meet performance, power, and size targets, while simultaneously providing cost savings for our customers," stated Kent Heath, director of cellular operations of Freescale's wireless group.

Pricing and Availability

The MMM6035 can be incorporated into a platform or as a stand alone component. It is available now with a suggested resale price of $2.50 at 10K quantities.
